I’ve been working as a project manager on software development projects for around 8 months and here are some of the books that helped me in this journey:

The Effective Manager

This one helped me answer the question “What is a good manager?” and gives you tools to achieve that. I recommend that you start with this one, being a small book that can be read fast and gives you a lot of valuable information.

Managing A Programming Project: Processes and People

This one helped me answer the question “What are the stages in a software development project?” and how to manage that. This book is the treasure chest of information that software development managers seek.

High Output Management

This one helped me answer the question “How to deliver good results as a manager?”. This is a book highly talked by other authors and it contains valuable information on management, helping managers all over the world improve their productivity and their team’s results.

The Manager’s Path: A Guide for Tech Leaders Navigating Growth and Change

This one helps to answer the question “What are the stages in the journey from an engineer to a technical manager?”. I haven’t finished the book yet but so far it has been super valuable to me, especially the part about mentoring, which was a subject not talked in-depth in previous books I read.

Bonus books:

How to Win Friends & Influence People

You will be dealing with people your whole life (you wanting or not) and that is not always an easy task. This book taught me important lessons, and dealing with people has been a little easier now.

Crucial Accountability: Tools for Resolving Violated Expectations, Broken Commitments, and Bad Behavior

You might face violated expectations, broken commitments, and bad behavior during your time being a manager (and through life in general). This book is a best seller that contains tools to help you deal with those situations.

Let me know your opinions on my list and if you read any of the books mentioned, your thoughts on it. I will appreciate it if we could share knowledge on the subject and grow together!!
